Rolls 1445 and 1449: Ilford HP5+ @ EI 1600 / Rollei RPX 400 @ EI 1600 // Rodinal 1+100 semi-stand
- empty space. (on top)
- 1449: Volk at Fargo Brewing Company / Northern Plains Botanic Garden, Fargo. (2–3 May 2024. hand-rolled HP5+ @ EI 1600 in Minolta XE-7.) (on top.)
- 1445: Art in Bloom at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. (27 Apr 2024. Rollei RPX 400 @ EI 1600 in Minolta XE-7.) (on bottom.)
Loaded into the 1.15L tank inside daylight changing bag. Pre-wet film for ~20 minutes. During the pre-soak, mixed 10mL Rodinal (5mL/roll) in 1L distilled water. Poured developer in; did not top off, as the water line is well above the top of the reels. Agitated 40x over the first minute, then 1x more at 60:00. All agitations are half-agitations, gently (i.e., gently twisting to a 90-degree inversion, then gently back).
After two hours, disposed of developer, rinsed in ~68 degree tap water. Fixed in Arista fixer 1+4 for 6 minutes (that’s now 16 rolls from this batch of fixer), inverting 10x over 15 seconds at the top of every minute. Reclaimed fixer and rinsed for ten minutes in tap water, then emptied tank, added a few drops of Photo-Flo, filled tank with tap water and agitated 20x, and hung negatives vertically to dry.
Evaluation and notes
Roll 1445
Like roll 1444, a nice clean set of shots from the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The RPX doesn’t push quite as nicely as the Kentmere in the other roll, but it looks pretty enough. There’s some dust scratching and some scanner-lens discoloration in a few spots here, but the bigger problem is that much of the roll is not developed enough for how underexposed it was in the museum. But there are some usable pictures in here, all in all.
Roll 1449
Photos are overexposed relative to the developing used: lots of highlights are blown out. In retrospect, with how much the band was moving around, it would have been better to shorten the shutter speed rather than closing down the aperture. Or maybe it would have been better to open the aperture to give me a bit of leeway on focusing. In any case, there’s little that’s usable, but some of what is usable is fun (12/40A, 14/42A, 16/01A) — Volk is a fun band live, and I’d seem them again. The drummer has more energy than pretty much any other drummer I can think of, for one thing.
In any case, I’ve had worse results guessing and hoping at exposure at concerts, but I’ve had worse results, too. Decent results on the post-concert shots at the end of the roll, so it looks like the problem is the exposure, not developing.
