All four rolls of film were dropped off at and picked up from LA Film Lab for (quite satisfactory!) processing.

Evaluation and notes

Roll 1497

I really love the way the cool colors that this film uses work with the warm tones of Albuquerque: every orange-ish beige or terra-cotta red or cherry-colored sign is surrounded by blue shadows. This makes shots like 01, with its cityscape at sunset a kind of weird New Mexican symphony, with its slanting golden sunset light and its turqoise murals and its indigo shadows, really pleasing. Same deal for all of those rooftop shots (01–09), in fact; there are some nice leading-lines compositions (03–06, e.g.) in there, too, though I don’t see any shots where the colors and the lines work together in any particularly useful way.

The shots of the neon signs (11–14) are pleasant but I somehow expected more. In truth, they’re overexposed; neon is always tricky. But they’re not so badly overexposed that scanning can’t save them. Not thrilled with the composition on them, overall, though: I can tell I was hasty.

Some of the mountain landscapes later in the roll, on the other hand, are rather good: I quite like some of what I managed to do with near-vertical surfaces along the highways here (e.g., 20, 21), and some compositions juxtaposing vertical surfaces in the distance with horizontal surfaces nearby are quite dynamic (e.g., 24, 26, 33).

All in all, quite a successful roll.
