Loaded into the 1L tank inside daylight changing bag. Pre-soaked film for ~30 minutes. During the pre-soak, mixed 14mL Rodinal (3.5mL/roll) in distilled water to ~800 mL. Poured developer in, then topped off with distilled water. Agitated 40x over the first minute, then 2x more at 20:00 and 40:00. All agitations are half-agitations, gently (i.e., gently twisting to a 90-degree inversion, then gently back).

After 60:00, disposed of developer, rinsed in ~70 degree tap water. Fixed for 6 minutes, agitating 10x/minute (that’s now 8 rolls from this batch of fixer). Reclaimed fixer and rinsed for ten minutes in tap water, then emptied tank, added a few drops of Photo-Flo, filled tank with distilled water and agitated 20x, and hung negatives vertically to dry.

Evaluation and notes

Roll 1493

A little bit of light piping at the beginning again: super annoying, ruined a reasonably good shot or two. Otherwise, there are some pretty shots on this roll: the high contrast works well in the desert, and inside the rather narrow range of exposure latitude, the response cure is nice and smooth, and the fine grain does a great job with textures (e.g., the posts on 05A, the boards in the wall in 08A and 11A). Landscapes work better than I expected, too: 10A and 12A are nice (though both will require some finesse in postprocessing).

The bits in the ABQ BioPark are, on the whole, less successful: more washed out in the bright sunlight, and the higher dynamic range in the scene means there’s more lost in the details for the shadows. Still, postprocessing might salvage 15A, 16A, 17A, 18A, 20A… . And 19A is a nice garden shot that manages to balance the light and shadow, leaving foliage in the middle gray range and showing off the structure of the walls and pathways. The plants in the glass house in 27A are similarly well balanced. Similarly, the bare trees and the garbage can in 22A are pleasing. The shed in 34A is overexposed, but not unsalvageably so.

All in all, a moderately successful roll.
