First tank:

  • 1440: Bourbon Street and environs, New Orleans. (6 Apr 2024. Hand-rolled Fomapan 100 @ EI 100 in Minolta XE-7) (on top.)
  • 1434: Grand Isle State Park / drive to New Orleans. (3 Apr 2024. Hand-rolled Fomapan 100 @ EI 100 in Minolta XE-7) (on bottom.)

Second tank:

Four more rolls, in two groups of two each in two-roll tanks.

During the pre-soak, mixed 1L Caffenol CL in ~850mL water, then topped off to 1L. 16g waterfree washing soda, 10g Vitamin C, ?10g iodized salt, and 40g Essential Everyday instant coffee, distilled water. Poured into tank. Agitated 40x over first minute, then 10x over 15 seconds at 35:00. These are half-agitations, gently (i.e., gently twisting to a 90-degree inversion, then gently back).

After 70 minutes, disposed of developer, rinsed in 68 degree water. Fixed in Ilford Rapid Fixer 1+4 for 6 minutes (that’s now 20 rolls from this batch of fixer), inverting 10x over 15 seconds at the top of every minute. Recaptured fixer and rinsed for ten minutes, then emptied tank, added a few drops of Photo-Flo, filled tank again and agitated 20x, and hung negatives vertically to dry.

Evaluation and notes

Roll 1434

I’ve certainly had more successful rolls of Fomapan than this. Still, it’s occasionally got a worthwhile result, and there’s some genuinly well-timed moments here, I think (07, 16, e.g.). Some of the landscapes manage to work nicely, too (11). I guess, come right down to it, I’ve shot less successful rolls of film out of the window in a moving car.

Film seems to have been crimped in the film cassette, although I guess it’s possible that it was also loaded badly onto the film spools.

Roll 1437

One of my more successful recent rolls of Fomapan, I think. Nnice and crisp but maybe just a little bit overdeveloped.

Isolating subjects from backgrounds was difficult here and I hadn’t thought to bring my filters with me. Still, there are some nice geometric results (e.g., 03).

Roll 1440

I’m happy with this one: there’s some nice shots of people in the French Quarter (01, 10). There’s plenty of textural detail on many different kinds of surfaces (10, 11). I’m also pleased to be getting both well-chosen moments and compositions I like in the same shot (e.g., 21) more often on this roll, too.

All in all, one of the better results I’ve had lately with Fomanpan in Caffenol.
