Rolls 1372 and 1412: Film Ferrania P30 @ EI 80 / Wolfen PF2 @ EI 3 // HC-110 1+119 semi-stand
- 1412: Newport (MN) Transit Station / off Hiawatha Ave., Mineapolis. (25 Oct 2023–10 Jan 2024. Film Ferrania P30 @ EI 80 in Minolta XE-7.) (On top.)
- 1372: Raspberry Island / home (St Paul) / Twin Cities. (12–17 June 2023. Wolfen PF2 @ EI 3 in Minolta XE-7.) (On bottom.)
Two more rolls semi-standing in HC-110 that didn’t go in the canister with rolls 1419, 1420, and 1421.
Loaded inside daylight changing bag. Pre-wet film for ~135 minutes. During the pre-soak mixed ~4.2mL HC-110 concentrate into distilled water to ~400 mL. Emptied out pre-wetting water and poured developer in to the 500mL tank and topped off the tank with distilled water. Agitated 40x over the first sixty seconds or so, knocked on the tank several times to dislodge bubbles, and then agitated 5x at 30:00 and 45:00. All agitations are all half-agitations, gently (i.e., gently twisting to a 90-degree angle, then gently back).
After 60 minutes, disposed of developer, rinsed 5x/10x/20x in 68-degree tap water. Fixed in fixer 1+4 for 6 minutes, inverting 10x over 15 seconds at the top of every minute. (That’s now 37 rolls fixed in this batch of fixer.) Reclaimed fixer and rinsed for ten minutes in tap water, then emptied tank, added a few drops of Photo-Flo, filled tank with distilled water and agitated 20x, and hung negatives vertically to dry.
Evaluation and notes
Roll 1372
Once again, a nice roll of PF2 here in some ways: solid, chunky shadows; very low grain; nicely textured highlights and midtones. There’s a really beautiful gradation from midtones to both shadows and highlights.
There’s some areas of underdevelopment here (05 through 09 all show this to some extent): I think there’s too little HC-110 concentrate in here, and some more agitation would probably help. Uneven development notwithstanding, there’s some nice shots here. 18 has gorgeous bark and leaf texture, and the narrow depth of field makes the blurred background set off the subject beautifully. No surprise: underlit plant shots around the house are useless. So are the shots from the passenger seat of a moving car.
All in all, not much here: what’s not underlit is mostly unevenly developed. But it was an interesting and educational roll anyway.
Roll 1412
Ferrania P30 is looking good in these shooting situations, especially after the first few shots before the show started falling. Bricks in 09A are dark and chunky; the graffiti in 10A, 16A, etc. stands out well; the high contrast between the snow and the blacktop in 11A is striking, almost graphical. The grain silos in 12A–16A also look great, with the texture of the concrete really standing out from the snow.
Lots of nice, high-contrast scenes here: the bicycle in the snow in 29A, for instance. The ACME foundry at the end of the roll. Lots of gorgeous material.
I’m happy with how this turned out. In contrast to the other roll in the tank, which clearly needed more total developer, this roll developed cleanly and evenly.
