Rolls 1364 and 1379: Film Washi Z @ EI 400 / JCH Street Pan @ EI 400 // HC-110 1+119 semi-stand
- 1379: Eels at First Avenue. (20 June 2023. Film Washi Z @ EI 400 in Konica Z-Up 110.) (on top.)
- 1364: Calvary Cemetery walking tour. (16 May 2023. JCH Street Pan @ EI 400 in Pentax K-1000.) (on bottom.)
Still catching up on my film backlog! Still have plenty to do.
Loaded inside daylight changing bag. Pre-wet film for ~30 minutes. During the pre-soak mixed 4.4 mL HC-110 into ~400mL tap water. Poured developer in to the four-roll tank and topped off the tank with tap water. Agitated 40x over the first sixty seconds or so, knocked on the tank several times to dislodge bubbles, and let it sit for one hour. Gave ten additional agitations at 30:00. All agitations are all half-agitations, gently (i.e., gently twisting to a 90-degree angle, then gently back).
After 60 minutes, disposed of developer, rinsed in 70 degree water, filling the tank three times and agitating 5x, 10x, and 20x respectively, before pouring out water. Replenished fixer with 300mL Ilford Rapid Fixer stock. Fixed in Ilford Rapid Fixer 1+4 for 6 minutes, inverting 10x over 15 seconds at the top of every minute. (That’s now 27 rolls of film fixed in this batch of fixer, 2 since replenishment.) Reclaimed fixer and rinsed for ten minutes in tap water, then emptied tank, added a few drops of Photo-Flo, filled tank with tap water and agitated 20x, and hung negatives vertically to dry.
Evaluation and notes
Roll 1364
Another really pleasant-looking roll that, once again, gives me hope for the underlying film stock—in this case, JCH Street Pan, in which I’d just had a disappointment with roll 1359. Outside, though, or at least when given adequate light, this is a rich-looking film stock, with solid darks and creamy-looking lights. Grain is definitely readily apparent, but it’s not overpowering, and the relatively high contrast helps to give the geometric three-dimensionality of the monuments in the graveyard a real visible solidity. (02 is a good example of this; so is 05.)
The extended spectral sensitivity really helps with adjacent shades of green and gray here; but sometimes adjacent colors still don’t get adequate visual separation. 09 is an example of this, one where even the different textures don’t really help with visual parsing. Textures of stonework onthe monuments are consistently good; there’s nice accutance showing the detail on many shots (14 sticks out here, as do 18–19). It really captures the texture and shade of the moss on many of the monuments (27 stands out).
I’m really happy with the shots here.
Roll 1379
My intent on getting this little point-and-shoot was that it would be easier to get a non-SLR into concerts. This turns out to be true, but this little Konica, general photo quality notwithstanding (see roll 1355), just doesn’t do well in concert lighting. Not having manual control over shutter speed is a deal-breaker here.
Nothing usable on this roll.
