- 1311: The House on the Rock. (24 August 2022. HP5+ @ EI 1600 in Pentax K-1000) (on bottom.)
Four more.
Loaded inside daylight changing bag. Pre-wet film for about 45 minutes. During the pre-soak, mixed 12mL Rodinal in ~900mL tap water. Poured developer in and topped off with tap water. Agitated 40x over the first minute, then one inversion (flipped tank over) at 60:00. Initial agitations are half-agitations, gently (i.e., gently twisting to a 90-degree inversion, then gently back).
After two hours, disposed of developer, rinsed in 68 degree water. Fixed in Ilford Rapid Fixer 1+4 for 6 minutes (that’s now 12 rolls from this batch of fixer), inverting 10x over 15 seconds at the top of every minute. Reclaimed fixer and rinsed for ten minutes in tap water, then emptied tank, added a few drops of Photo-Flo, filled tank with tap water and agitated 20x, and hung negatives vertically to dry.
Evaluation and notes
Roll 1311
The House on the Rock is a difficult shooting situation, especially for film; it’s dark inside. All in all, I think that the full stand for two hours with just one half-agitation in the middle worked quite well here.
This is especially true outdoors, where the indirect lighting on the statuary (7, 8, 9) is glorious, showing off the texture quite well; and the outdoor architecture shots (10, 11) work well when the subject is well-lit, but not when the subject isn’t (e.g., 12 is woefully underdeveloped). Well-lit indoor statuary (18) also looks great
Similarly interior shots with lots of windows are wonderful here: the lantern still-life in 13, and the Infinity Room in 14–6, all look fantastic, and really show off how good HP5+ looks in Rodinal.
Roll 1315
As with roll 1311, it was frequently just too dark; as with 1314, the hand-rolled cannister jammed in the camera. This roll was basically a loss.
Roll 1326
Lighting situation at this concert was just abominable. The negatives are relatively scratched, too, and trying to recover detail of course emphasizes the scratches. One negative (13) has a big dumb fingerprint right in the middle, too, because why not try for the trifecta, apparently.
All that notwithstanding, there are some salvageable shots here, and some of them (6, 10, 14) have the virtue of being well-timed and/or -composed. In a lot of cases (e.g. 17), the higher-contrast, not-processed-via-tonemapping version looks a lot better, more like it was taken at a concert, while the tonemapped-from-digital-negativew version looks less interesting.
All in all, glad this was a short roll, though. Actively painful to see how scratched and fingerprinted some of the shots were.
Roll 1342
Definitely supports the claim I made on the notes for roll 1341, saying that Rodinal would have done better than Caffenol. That’s true, but these are still mostly unusable. Still, shots 10, 12, and 16 show some hope.
