Two more rolls in one of the two-roll tanks.

Loaded inside daylight changing bag. Pre-wet film for about an hour. During the pre-soak, mixed 500mL Caffenol CL: 8g washing soda; wait for it to dissolve and stop bubbling; 6g Vitamin C, wait for it to dissolve and stop bubbling; 10g iodized salt, wait for it to dissolve and stop bubbling; 20g Everyday Essentials instant coffee, wait for it to fully dissolve and for bubbles to dissipate, all in 400mL tap water, topped off to 500mL. Poured developer in. Agitated 40x over the 30 seconds, then 10x at 30:00. All agitations are gentle half-agitations (i.e., gently twisting to a 90-degree inversion, then gently back).

After 60 minutes, disposed of developer, rinsed thoroughly in tap water. Fixed in Ilford Rapid Fixer 1+4 for 6 minutes (that’s now 8 rolls in this batch of fixer), inverting 10x over 15 seconds at the top of every minute. Dumped fixer and rinsed for ten minutes in tap water, then emptied tank, added a few drops of Photo-Flo, filled tank with tap water and agitated 20x, and hung negatives vertically to dry.

Evaluation and notes

Roll 1307

Disappointing concert shots from all four of these rolls, really: the stage was backlit by the sun and by the stagelights; the seats didn’t give a great angle; the new lens I was trying out didn’t zoom as much as I’d like; and stand-developing compressed the tonal range too much. The band wasn’t putting on much of a show visually, either, although the music was good.

Wish I’d develped these using a standard agitation schedule and pushed them a little, although that wouldn’t have helped with the band not doing me any favors. Alternately, letting it soup for eighty minutes might have better developed the contrast.

Roll 1341

Nothing useful at all: the concert was too dark. Even two-pass scanning and tonemapping doesn’t drag enough detail out of the negatives to make the process worthwhile. Some of the early shots might have been recovered by pushing in Rodinal, but Caffenol didn’t work out for this set.
