Three 400-speed rolls and one roll of 100-speed Kodak slide film, all shot at box speed, leaving the top spool off entirely rather than putting in an empty spool in the hope that that helps keep the tank lid on more easily and with less leaking. Developed on 35mm rolls in the five-roll tank. This is just a standard eighty-minute semi-stand development with one agitation interval after the first minute.

Loaded inside daylight changing bag. Pre-wet film for about tn minutes. During the pre-soak, mixed 12 mL Rodinal in 1L distilled water. Poured developer in and topped off with distilled water. Agitated 40x over the first minute, then inverted tank once without further agitating at 40:00. Initial agitations are half-agitations, gently (i.e., gently twisting to a 90-degree inversion, then gently back). After the halfway inversion, let tank sit upside-down, monitoring for leaks. There are none, so it looks like the lids are correctly matched to the tanks again.

After 80 minutes, disposed of developer, rinsed in 68 degree water. Fixed in Ilford Rapid Fixer 1+4 for 6 minutes (that’s now 18 rolls from this batch of fixer), inverting 10x over 15 seconds at the top of every minute. Dumped fixer and rinsed for ten minutes in tap water, then emptied tank, added a few drops of Photo-Flo, filled tank with distilled water and agitated 20x, and hung negatives vertically to dry.

Evaluation and notes

Roll 1261

Dark and kind of murky, textures, sometimes works (1, 3); sometimes doesn’t (2, 4). Sometimes light areas are comparatively overdeveloped (5). Still, building shots are nice a lot of the time; I particularly like 6-8 and 11.

Photos of Fort Snelling are more or less a total loss. They’re dark and blurry, more muddy than the architectural shots earlier in the roll.

Photos of the rose garden are the most successful on the roll, all in all. There’s a nice rich dense texture to the flowers, and the slide film really works to give depth and resonance to the images. There’s nice separation between objects here. The narrow depth of field from the zoom lens looks good, too.

There’s a lot of micro-damage to the negatives, though: scratching and/or dust, or something. I wonder whether that’s due to the cross-processing in some way. All in all, slightly over-developed.

Roll 1268

Really crisp; I like HP5+ in Rodinal a fair amount. Black water in ponds (e.g., 03, 04) is beautiful in reflections and separates well from the greenery floating on top of it; it also sets off the reflections of other objects. All in all, this is rather overdeveloped, but that’s to be expected at 80 minutes when that time was chosen to work with the roll of Ektachrome.

Photos of vegetation alone are a little less effective separation between vegetation and background in a lot of shots (e.g. 09). Ah well, Garry Winograd said he photographed to see what things looked like when they’re photographed. I guess I found out what those trees look like photographed.

Many photos late in the roll are underexposed. I don’t know why that is.

Much of this roll is a loss, all in all. Sigh.

Roll 1269

Again, much of this roll is largely a loss. There’s insufficient separation between vegetative tones, and the roll as a whole is underexposed. I believe the light meter battery was slowly dying at this point? And Fomapan 400 just isn’t as crisp as the 100-speed film that Foma makes.

Roll 1270

Again, largely a loss. There are some worthwhile pictures here, more so than in the previous roll – especially when filers get good separation in vegetataion, and especially in some of the shots of buildings with wall texture that shows well in the HP5+ – but all in all, this particular day shooting wasn’t that successful.
