• 1235: vaxx drive to Detroit Lakes, MN. (21 April 2021. Arista .EDU 100 = Fomapan 100, at EI 100, on top)
  • 1230: Mpls/St Paul, and north (early April? 2021. Kentmere Pan 100 @ EI 100, on bottom)

Mixed 6.5mL Rodinal into ~400mL water. Pre-wet film for half an hour at 68 degrees, changing water twice. Poured out water, then poured in developer, and topped off with tap water to ~500mL; agitated 40x over 60 seconds, then 10x over 15 seconds at 30:00, to a total developing time of 60 minutes.

After 60 minutes, disposed of developer, rinsed in 68 degree water, filling, agitating, and emptying, with 5, 10, and 20 agitations after filling. Fixed in Ilford Rapid Fixer 1+4 for 6 minutes (that’s now 31 rolls from this batch of fixer), turning 10x over 15 seconds at the top of every minute. Recaptured fixer and rinsed for ten minutes, then emptied tank, added a few drops of Photo-Flo, filled tank again and agitated 20x, and hung negatives vertically to dry.

Evaluation and notes

Roll 1230

Some nice stuff on here: all in all, Fomapan 100 looks good in Rodinal. It’s nice and crisp, and has a nice long range. There are a few frames looking unevenly developed; again, a little more agitation might pay off. Vegetation in particular has good textures on this roll. There’s nice deep tones in the HDR scans of some clouds, too.

There’s more grain here than I’d like in some places, like in clouds, but it’s not unbearable.

Roll 1235

Fomapan in Rodinal is nice and crisp, contrasty without really killing off the mid-tones. But this looks overdeveloped, and I think less development time would have paid off here. via-HDR scanning salvages a lot with good quality, though, especially by restoring cloud detail to the sky.

There’s some cool shots on a relatively gloomy day here, and the texture is sometimes wonderful. Greys are kind of stodgily neutral. There’s lots of depth here. Doing the same again but limiting to 1+100 might pay off better.
