Rolls 1225 and 1226: Ilford HP5+ @ EI 400 / Ilford PanF+ @ EI 50 // Caffenol CL semi-stand
- 1226: NE Minneapolis arts district (29 Mar 2021. PanF+ @ EI 50.) (On top.)
- 1225: Minneapolis Institute of Art / Minneapolis. (28 Mar 2021. HP5+ @ EI 400.) (On bottom.)
One roll of Ilford HP5+ and one roll of PanF+, both shot at box speed on the Pentax K-1000, on 35mm rolls in the 120 tank.
Mixed 500mL Caffenol C-L: 8g washing soda, 5g ascorbic acid powder, 15g iodized table salt, 20g Kroger Original Roast instant coffee. Pre-wet film ~1 hour at room temperature. Poured out water, then poured in developer; agitated 20x over 30 seconds, then 5x at 30 minutes, to a total developing time of 60 minutes. Alternated orientation at each agitation to avoid uneven development.
After 60 minutes, disposed of developer, rinsed in 68 degree water, filling and emptying the tank until the water rinsed completely clear, then four more times. Fixed in Ilford Rapid Fixer 1+4 for 5 minutes (that’s now 24 rolls from this batch of fixer), turning 10x over 15 seconds at the top of every minute. Recaptured fixer and rinsed for ten minutes, then emptied tank, added a few drops of Photo-Flo, filled tank again and agitated 20x, and hung negatives vertically to dry.
Evaluation and notes
Roll 1225
HP5+ in Caffenol CL is gorgeous, and there’s plenty to like here. In particular, the texture on the sculpture is wonderful, and the ivory tones in sculptures cut from bright white rock are velvety and gorgeous. There is some halation on some shots, especially visible on HDR-type scans.

Roll 1226
PanF+ in Caffenol CL doesn’t always give satisfactory results; I’m still not clear on why. Maybe I should use no iodized salt and avoid pairing it with higher-ISO films? There seems to be unevent development on some frames, and the roll as a whole looks slightly underdeveloped. A little more agitation might work better, too. There’s plenty of dust and scratching here, too.
There are some negatives that are coming out well, and overall the texture of the building surfaces is great in some places. There are also instances of composition I’m rather proud of. But uneven development, dust, and scratching ruin a lot of decent-to-good shots here.
