Taking another shot at developing C-41 in B/W chemistry because apparently I’m too stubborn to learn from experience. Keeping temperature down to try to minimize grain, but also trying out additional overdevelopment and more vigorous agitation this time. Both rolls are FujiColor, at different speeds, both shot at box speed, on 35mm rolls in the 120 tank.

Mixed 1L Caffenol C-L because I’m using the leftover for batches 1126-1129-1130-1127-1131, which are developing in the five-reel tank at the same time. Put the beaker holding it in water at 62 degrees at the bottom of the picnic cooler to bring the developer temperature down. Allowed to cool to 62 degrees. The Time/Temp Converter suggests 97 minutes and 42 seconds at 62 degrees; I’m going to go leave it developing for an even two hours here. This time, I’ll be agitating every fifteen minutes, rather than also converting the agitation time for the lower temperature.

Composition for this 1L of Caffenol C-L: 16g washing soda, 10g ascorbic acid powder, 12g iodized table salt, 40g Kroger instant coffee. Pre-wet film ~10 minutes at 62 degrees, holding it in the cooler to pre-wet. Poured out water, then poured in developer; agitated 15x over 30 seconds, then 10x over 15 seconds every fifteen thereafter, to a total developing time of 120 minutes. Kept the cannister in the same water bath in the cooler during the cycle, trying to maintain 62 degree temperature by periodically adding ice. Kept top end of film cannister up at all times while in cooler.

After 120 minutes, disposed of developer, rinsed in 68 degree water, filling and emptying the tank until the water rinsed completely clear, then four more times. Fixed in Ilford Rapid Fixer 1+4 for 7 minutes (that’s now 16 rolls from this batch of fixer, 6 since replenishment), turning 10x over 15 seconds at the top of every minute. Recaptured fixer and rinsed for five minutes, then emptied tank, added a few drops of Photo-Flo, filled tank again and agitated 20x, and hung negatives vertically to dry.
