Both are Fujicolor Superia X-tra 400 at box speed, on 35mm rolls in the 120 tank. First time developing C-41 in Caffenol! First time cross processing! Yay!

500mL Caffenol C-L: 8g washing soda, 5g ascorbic acid powder, 4g iodized table salt, 20g Folgers instant coffee, in that order, dissolving each completely before adding the next. Pre-wet film ~10 minutes at 68 degrees. Poured out water (purple!), then poured in developer; agitated 15x over 30 seconds, then 5x over 10 seconds every fifteen minutes to a total of 70 minutes. Turned canister over and kept it on its head after 35 minutes. Disposed of developer, rinsed in 68 degree water, filling and emptying the tank four times, then letting it fill and overflow gently for four minutes. Fixed in Ilford Rapid Fixer 1+4 for 7 minutes, turning 10x over 15 seconds at the top of every minute. Recaptured fixer and rinsed for ten minutes, then hung to dry.

Negatives have comparatively low dynamic range, and are often rather grainy–especially roll 1093, which was taken in suboptimal lighting conditions inside (backlit, long lens). However. even on roll 1093, some shots are quite usable. Notably, experimental negatives from roll 1093 processed in Silverlight using 48->24 bit (color) processing, then careful adjustment in the GIMP, are sometimes quite good if the careful hand-holding pays off. It’s never going to be my preferred cheap film, but it’s nice to know it can be made to work if all I have is a 35mm camera and the only film around is C-41.
