Rolls 1074 and 1075: HP5+ @ EI 3200 // Caffenol CL semi-stand
- 1075: Road back from California
- 1074: Road back from California
Both HP5+ exposed at EI 3200 – initially because I planned to develop them in Sprint Systems chemistry with two other rolls that had been pushed. Trying semi-stand development here, based on this blog post, to see get an idea whether HP5+ exposed at 1600 is what I want to shoot for the lunar eclipse tomorrow night. We’ll see.
Prewet film, both 35mm rolls in 120 tank, ~20 minutes at 68 degrees while mixing modified Caffenol C-L: 8g washing soda, 5g ascorbic acid powder, 7g iodized table salt, 20g Folgers instant coffee, in that order, dissolving each completely before adding the next. Let sit 5 minutes. Agitate 10x over first 20 seconds, then 10x over 20 seconds at 2:00, then 3x (gently) every 15 minutes to a total development time of 80 minutes. (Increasing from the 70 minutes Reinhold suggests to 80 minutes because, hey, it’s another stop. Maybe 10 minutes isn’t enough, but I’d rather underdevelop slightly than overdevelop slightly on my first shot at pushing HP5+ three stops in Caffenol.)
Dispose of developer, then rinse thoroughly at 68 degrees, filling and completely emptying tank several times over three minutes. Pour out water, then fix 7 minutes at 68 degrees, agitating 10x over 15 seconds at the top of each minute. (That’s now 14 rolls on this liter of fixer, including 4 after replenishment.)
Rinsed using Ilford method: dump fixer back into jug, then dump the rest of the fixer back into the jug, then remove lightproof cap and dump the rest of the fixer into the jug, then fill completely with water, cap and agitate 5x, dump water. Fill with water, cap and agitate 10x, dump water. Fill with water, cap and agitate 20x, dump water. To the Ilford method, added one small pump of washing soap. Hung to dry.
Note: these are definitely underdeveloped: there’s low dynamic range and not much in the way of real whites on the negatives. Should have been longer. Also, they sure are grainy.
Note: despite washing protocol, these are still spotted. Starting to wonder if I should be using distilled water here.
