Batch 109: Lavender Metheglin
Another mead resulting from our mead solera! For now, we're calling this batch Lavender Metheglin. Hopefully a better name will become apparent as it matures.
Ingredients in this batch
- Approx. 11⁄10 gallon solera mead, mostly fermented.
- 7g dried lavender from Penzeys Spices.
Procedure
Sanitized. Pumped mead into one-gallon carboy with racking cane, then added lavender. Popped in and filled an airlock.
Secondary fermentation began: 18 April 2018.
Bottling date: 17 October 2017
Final gravity: 0.998.
Estimated ABV: Approx. 13.5%.
Yield:
- 9 x 12 oz. bottles
- approx. 9 oz. additional mead in hydrometer tube and tasting glass
Total: 117 fl. oz., or approximately 91.5% of a gallon.
Observations
- 2018-04-19T14:42: The mead in the carboy has already started to clarify! Once again, I'm amazed by how dried flowers induce flocculation.
- 2018-04-24T20:08: Tasted mead. Removed dried lavender.
- 2018-06-14T20:29: Bottled, yielding 91.5% of a gallon at about 13.5% ABV. Used purple caps, of course.
