Here is the list of potential interview questions, which we developed in class on 28 January. I've organized them according to whether I personally think that they are lower-level questions (which might be one productive way to start off), medium-level, or higher-level questions (toward which you might want to try to steer the conversation).
Lower-level Questions
What is your background in your discipline? What was your education like?
What skills are important in your field?
Why/how did you choose your subject and your particular specialization in your field?
What is/are the biggest challenge(s) you've faced? How did they affect you?
What are your own writing habits like?
Who are your influences? Whom do you admire in your own discipline? How have they affected/influenced you?
What writing techniques and strategies do you use?
How do you put a class together? Choose readings?
Medium-level Questions
How does knowledge differ in your subject from other subjects?
What do you expect your students to get out of this class? What do you want your students to get out of your class?
What goals do you have for your own writing?
What is good writing in your discipline? What characteristics and goals does it have?
How do you make phrasing choices in your own writing?
What did you expect about your academic discipline that turned out not to be true? What did you learn about it that you would not have expected?
