8 February 2012
Major topics:
Thought for the day:
"[…] every word is at home, / Taking its place to support the others, / The word neither diffident nor ostentatious, / An easy commerce of the old and the new, / The common word exact without vulgarity, / The formal word precise but not pedantic, / The complete consort dancing together […]" -T.S. Eliot, Little Gidding V.4-10
Any questions, concerns, or problems re: paper-writing are excellent reasons to come talk to me.
Even if problem is "I just can't get started" or "I just don't know what to write about."
Questions for discussion:
In what ways is The Black Camel similar to other detective stories/movies with which you may be familiar? In what ways is it different?
Japanese actor Sessue Hayakawa siad that his motivation for establishing his own film company was to portray a Japanese person as he really is and not the way fiction paints him (Huang 193). Based on your reading of Haung's text, what perceptions and stereotypes do you think he was trying to correct?
Does Chang Apana's enjoyment of Warner Oland's portray of Charlie Chan constitute approval? How would you characterize their relationship?
Section assignment for next week's section: Bring a printed copy of the first page of a draft of your paper.
Or at least the first paragraph.
Or at least a paragraph saying what you're going to be writing about.
No participation credit next week unless you bring a print copy that meets these criteria.
