The script that generates the content in my blog The Worst of Bad Lovecraft has been updated. It now rejects titles that have been used in the past as entries.

Update to Creative Commons links

The HTML markup for two documents that license code under a Creative Commons license now tags the link to the license with rel="license", as suggested by the rel-license microformat>.

Several metadata elements are being updated on many pages

Certain encoded metadata is being replaced throughout the site. The meta keyword "copyright" has been replaced by the Dublin Core-compliant "dcterms.rights"; the "distribution" <meta> tag has been removed entirely; the keyword "date" has been replaced with "dcterms.date". Every page that uses the new Dublin Core terms also links appropriately to http://purl.org/dc/terms/ in the document head.

The upshot is that I'm abandoning meta-tags that I've been thoughtlessly using since the late 90s (due largely to my propensity for using existing HTML files as templates) in favor of more up-to-date terms as I think about starting to write HTML5 pages. In any case, using the up-to-date terms even in non-HTML5 documents makes it more likely that their metadata is intelligible to contemporary machines.

That I don't bother to update the "document updated" info at the bottom of every page, nor the semantic markup in the vevent microformat for pages that contain it, when I make massive automated updates that affect many documents. In case anyone was wondering.

Different fonts are loaded from Google Fonts for many pages across the site. Because last December's stylistic update was ugly, and I've been meaning to change it for a while now. This is just the night when I absolutely have to find time.

I like the updated semantic meanings of tags; the ideas underneath are basically sound, I think; and there's a lot of under-the-hood optimization. But The W3C's validator hasn't caught up yet, and a lot of web 2.0 trendiness demands noncompliant code. Sigh.

Content in the Web Design for Literary Theorists section of the site is being moved around as I think about how to adapt this series of lectures as a lecture/workshop series when I give it again this year. The old content is probably most easily visible from here.

Fixed some minor typos and encoding problems.
Several documents related to The Heirophant's Proselytizer Questionnaire — and several other documents on the site — previously had a combination of primary and secondary titles marked up with both the <h1> and <h2> tags. Now they're marked up with an <h1> tag only, broken in the middle with <br />. Which seems more sensible.

There's a gradual makeover in progress, since I've thought for a long time that the website's incremental changes have made it gradually uglier. Today, some colors and fonts were adjusted.

Stylesheets updated; site redesign done. (Done-ish. Done for now.) Things look a bit better, I think. In any case, there's no more immediate reaction on my part that the small changes have accrued into something ugly. Lots of small changes to HTML to support this, include the conversion to HTML5 on 34 files. Sitemap updated to point to blog, and to reprioritize.

Several changes made to the Web Design for Literary Theorists site in preparation for this year's instantiation:

Last year's web pages were moved down into a folder called 2013-2014/.
Dummy redirection documents were created to point to those relocated documents for documents that don't yet have a contemporary version, so that existing links won't break.
Last year's documents got new shortlinks from is.gd; the old shortlinks will continue to point to the most current version of the documents. Which is currently the dummy redirection documents. But still.
A new description for the series was written and placed as the top-level document for the series.

A mass change a week and a half ago, possibly the one that added the feed to all HTML pages, managed to reduce 38 files to zero bytes, possibly due to a text-editor crash. I've just discovered this and restored old version. Gods bless .

Small update to Lovecraft script

The script that generates The Worst of Bad Lovecraft has been tweaked again to eliminate two bugs: the first write to the temporary post file now overwrites the previous post instead of appending to it, to avoid generating an increasingly long story that builds on previous stories; and it now forces the temporary file to sync before emailing it, hopefully eliminating empty posts.

I've still been getting occasional blank posts, so I've tweaked the text-generating script to sleep for 30 seconds, then sync again, just to be sure. From this point forward, not all minor tweaks to the script will be documented in this feed; but they will always been documented in the Changes History section of the technical write-up.
