Lesson Plan for Week 3: General Thoughts and Notes

Patrick Mooney, TA
Eng 193, Prof. Newfield
21/22 January 2014
  1. Thought for the day:

One by one the mind of Doctor Reefy had made the thoughts. Out of many of them he formed a truth that arose gigantic in his mind. The truth clouded the world. It became terrible and then faded away and the little thoughts began again.

  2. Administrative Issues:
    1. Section issues? Crashing? Everyone's registered, right?
    2. Please hand in your detection structure assignment.
    3. I am moving my Tuesday office hours half an hour earlier for the rest of the quarter so that I can make Professor Newfield's weekly meetings with his TAs. They will now be 1:30-2:30.
    4. The final deadline to add classes is this coming Monday, the 27th (for students in the College of Letters & Science)
    5. I may need to move people from one WRG to another to balance group sizes now that registration is over. I'll let you know by email if this affects you, although most people will not be affected.
    6. Other registration/administrative issues?
  3. Questions for discussion:
    1. In what ways does Dupin's method in "Murders in the Rue Morgue" differ from the methods employed by the Paris gendarmerie? What characteristics does it have that the methods of the police do not?
    2. What are the individual pieces of evidence from which Dupin constructs his explanation?
    3. What specific capacities does Dupin have that allow him to engage in his explanatory procedure?
