Lesson plan for week 4: general thoughts and notes

Patrick Mooney, TA
Eng 133TL, Prof. Huang
1 February 2012

Major topics:

  1. Thought for the day:
    1. "Education may well be, as of right, the instrument whereby every individual, in a society like our own, can gain access to any kind of discourse. But we well know that in its distribution, in what it permits and in what it prevents, it follows the well-trodden battle-lines of social conflict. Every educational system is a political means of maintaining or of modifying the appropriation of discourse, with the knowledge and the powers it carries with it." -Michel Foucault, The Discourse on Language
  2. Administrative Issues:
    1. Questions about registration?
  3. Distribute grading rubric.
  4. Any questions, concerns, or problems are excellent reasons to come talk to me.
    1. Even if problem is "I just can't get started" or "I just don't know what to write about."
  5. Section assignment for next week's section: Bring a printed copy of the first page of a draft of your paper.
    1. Or at least the first paragraph.
    2. Or at least a paragraph saying what you're going to be writing about.
    3. No participation credit next week unless you bring a print copy that meets these criteria.
    4. (This assignment has been postponed because Professor Huang has postponed the paper due date.)
